COMMUNITY EVENTS AND CHARITIES
This page describes LRAACA community-benefit activities for 2019.
Although there is not a direct financial benefit to Douglas County from the annual LRAACA Swap Meet and Car Show, the events are highly beneficial to the County, particularly the City of Lawrence. For example, over the three-day event, over 400 vendors and several thousand visitors from surrounding states attend the events, spend money, and contribute to the tax base. LRAACA provides over $6,500 to the Douglas County Fairgrounds in rental fees for the Swap Meet, Car Show and annual Membership Appreciation Meeting.
ANNUAL LRAACA SWAP MEET
The LRAACA Swap Meet is held annually on the first full weekend of May. With the exception of $5 all-day parking, there is no charge for the public to attend. Douglas County 4-H clubs use the Swap Meet as a major fund-raiser. They provide food booths, a bean dinner, and clean up the fairgrounds during and after the swap meet. LRAACA provides spaces to the 4-H clubs at no cost. In addition to the profits from their food booths, LRAACA provides $4000 for their clean-up efforts. Proceeds from the Swap Meet fund LRAACA events and charities for the calendar year.
ANNUAL LRAACA CAR SHOW
The LRAACA Car Show is provided to the public at no cost – no cost to attend, no cost for parking, no cost to display antique cars. 4-H clubs earn funds through food booth operations.
ANNUAL LRAACA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
LRAACA provides college and technical school scholarships to Douglas County high school students. In 2019, scholarships between $500 and $2000, totaling $6000, were provided.
